LOS ÁNGELES | INFORMACIÓN ÚTIL ANTES DE VIAJAR

Voy a empezar a contaros todo el itinerario que hicimos en el viaje a Los Ángeles en varios posts, pero como introducción me gustaría hacer una lista de algunas cosas útiles antes de viajar, sobre todo en ésta época del año. 

Fui con Miki y con mis amigos Sil y Dan a pasar el fin de año y a celebrar allí que Sil cumplía 30 años el 1 de enero. Nos apetecía un viaje especial y teníamos bastantes excusas además era nuestro aniversario, Miki y yo hacemos ya 7 años juntos.

I'm going to start wrinting you all the itinerary in L.A in several posts. I went with Miki and my friends Sil and Dan to spend New Year's Eve and to celebrate there that Sil turned 30 on January 1st. We wanted a special trip and we had enough excuses, it was also our anniversary, Miki and I have been together for 7 years now.

Before starting the itinerary I am going to leave some curiosities and tips to travel to LA, especially at this time of year.

Los VUELOS: cogimos los vuelos como con seis meses de antelación y salían muy bien de precio. Fue un vuelo directo desde el Aeropuerto Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas al LAX con Norweian. Cuando llegamos a USA había una cola de inmigración como no había visto en mi vida, tardamos como unas dos horas en pasar los controles, aunque no tuvimos ningún problema.

The FLIGHTS: we took the flights six months in advance and they came out very economic. It was a direct flight from Adolfo Sarez Madrid Barajas airport to LAX with Norweian. When we arrived in the USA there was an immigration line that I had not seen in my life, it took us about two hours to pass the controls, although we did not have any problems.

El ESTA: Antes de ir tienes que solicitar el ESTA, es un documento que te acredita para entrar. Se rellena online en esta web (hay varias que son falsas) y tienes que pagar unas tasas como de unos 14$. Nosotros lo sacamos unas semanas antes porque se paga y se envía y tardan unos días en gestionarlo.

The ESTA: Before going you have to request the ESTA, it is a document that accredits you to enter. It can be filled online in this website (there are several that are fake) and you have to pay some fees like about $14. We took it out a few weeks before because after been paid and sent it takes a few days to manage it.

El COCHE: Alquilamos el coche desde España por Internet también con antelación. Lo alquilamos en Europcar pero me imagino que cualquier compañía medianamente grande será igual. La verdad es que no comparamos precios, fuimos al que nos sonaba. El coche se recogía fuera del aeropuerto y había un shuttle que te llevaba hasta el alquiler. No es necesario el carnet de conducir internacional, con el  español vale.

CAR: We rent the car from Spain on the Internet also in advance. We rent it at Europcar but I imagine that any medium sized company will be the same. The truth is that we did not compare prices, we went to the one that sounded familiar to us. The car was picked outside the airport and there was a shuttle that took you to the rental. The international driver's license is not necessary, with the Spanish licence is ok.

El ALOJAMIENTO: Alquilamos un Aribnb con mucha antelación. Era un piso en la planta alta de una casa de dos alturas. No era muy grande pero acogedor y sobretodo es que estaba muy bien situado en cuanto a distancia de todo. Siempre tardábamos como máximo 20 min a cualquier sitio de la ciudad, algo que puede variar mucho según en la zona en la que estés. Estábamos en Culver City, un barrio muy normal pero bien situado. Teníamos un super al lado y plaza de parking privada en la casa.

ACCOMMODATION: We rent an Aribnb well in advance. It was an apartment on the top floor of a two-storey house. It was not very big but cozy and above all, it was very well located not as far from everything. It always took us like 20 minutes to any place in the city, something that can vary greatly depending on the area where you are. We were in Culver City, a very random neighborhood but well located. We had a market next door and private parking space outside the house.

El TIEMPO: el clima es super distinto las horas de sol y las de no sol. Durante el día se podía ir en manga corta e incluso con falda sin medias y un jersey, pero en cuento se ponía el sol era horroroso, hacía un frío tremendo. Yo cada mañana, al salir de casa, metía en el coche un pantalón largo un jersey, calcetines y un abrigo para la tarde. Se ponía el sol a las 16.50h a si que por la tarde aprovechábamos para planes indoor como ir a museos, a outlets o a ver una película al cine. Eso si, no nos perdimos un puesta de sol, son espectaculares desde Venice o Santa Mónica.

WEATHER: the weather is super different from sun hours to no sun. During the day you could go in short sleeves and even with a skirt without stockings and a sweater, but as the sun went down it was horrible, it was very cold. Every morning when I left the house, I took in the car a sweater, socks and a coat for the afternoon. The sun went down at 16.50h so in the afternoon we took advantage of indoor plans such as going to museums, outlets or the cinema. Anyway, we did not miss a sunset, they are spectacular from Venice or Santa Monica.

El CAMBIO de MONEDA: cambiamos algo de dinero en el aeropuerto pero es bastante timo, yo intentaría cambiar lo menos posible, lo justo para un por si acaso, pero lo mejor es pagar con tarjeta, en casi todos los sitios la admiten. Ojo que  aveces las de débito no funcionan, yo siempre llevo crédito y débito porque más de una vez he tiendo problemas.

CHANGE of CURRENCY: we exchange some money at the airport but it is quite expensive, I would try to change as less as possible, just in case, but the best thing is to pay by card, in almost all places admit it. Watch out that sometimes the debit card doesn't work, I always take credit and debit card with me because more than once I have problems.

El CAMBIO de HORA: son 9h de diferencia cuando estuvimos y el cuerpo tarda en acostumbrarse. Casi siempre nos íbamos a dormir sobre las 8 de la tarde o las 9 y nos levantábamos a las 6 o 7 de la mañana. La noche de fin de año nos costó horrores aguantar hasta las 12. La vuelta además fue horrible, menos mal que pedimos días de vacaciones después de volver porque tardé como tres días en acostumbrarme.

JET LAG: there are 9h of difference with Spain and the body takes time to get used. We always went to sleep around 8 in the afternoon or 9 and we got up at 6 or 7 in the morning. In New YEar's was horrible for us to endure until 12 p.m.. The return was also horrible, luckily we had some more holidays after the returning because it took me about three days to get used to it.

El TRÁFICO: A todos lados se va en coche, es imprescindible y la ciudad está pensada para el coche, es muy cómodo conducir y aparcar. Los famosos atascos de las pelis apenas los vimos, sólo por la tarde sobre las 6 o las 7 que la gente volvía a casa. Es fácil hacerse a la forma de conducir aunque al principio cuesta entender cual es tu semáforo porque el de los coches está siempre en la acera de enfrente del cruce en el que estés, no está en la tuya y es algo confuso.

TRAFFIC: You go everywhere by car, it is essential, and the city is designed for the car, it is very convenient to drive and park. We barely saw the famous traffic jams in the movies, only in the afternoon about 6 or 7 p.m  that people returned home. It is easy to get used to the way they drive although at the beginning it is difficult to understand what your traffic light is because it is in front of the intersection you are in, not by your side like in Spain so it is somewhat confusing.

Las TIPS y las TAXES: En todos los restaurantes hay que dejar de propina un porcentaje del total de la cuenta, normalmente es u 18% o 25% a si que hay que contar con ello. Además cada vez que compras algo el recio del artículo va sin taxes (tasas) y cuando vas a la caja te dicen el importe total, es como el IVA mas o menos, creo que es un 20%.

TIPS and TAXES: In all restaurants you have to leave a tip depending on the total amount of the bill, normally it is 18% or 25% so you have to count on it. Also, every time you buy something, the price of the article goes without taxes (taxes) and when you pay they tell you the total amount, it's like IVA here more or less, I think it's 20%.
